Inspection & Certification

A gas installation consists of piping, valves, fittings, instrumentation, safety devices and storage units (cylinders or tanks). If you have a gas installation at home or at your business, it is important to remember that your system must be inspected before commissioning and at regular intervals afterwards.

At Arugas we have a team of experienced professionals that can carry out these inspections for you so that you don’t have to worry. In this section we will give you a little more information about two types of inspection: the pre-commissioning inspection and the periodic inspection.

Inspection before commissioning an installation

Before you may connect your appliance(s) to your gas installation and start ordering gas either at home or your business, the installation needs to be inspected. This is called the pre-commissioning inspection. During this inspection we look at various items such as the piping and fittings that were used, tightness of the system, the condition of the appliance(s), the location where the cylinders will be placed and so on.

Arugas will only deliver gas if your installation passes the inspection.

To give you an idea we have summarized the rules that apply for a household cylinder installation. An installation will only pass inspection if it complies with the below rules:

Cylinders are placed outside on a concrete base;
Cylinders must be placed at the front of the house, or on the side. Cylinders cannot be placed at the back of the house;
Cylinders must be visible from the main road (for safety reasons);
Cylinders must be at least 1.5 m removed from an air-conditioning or air intake vent, appliance or window;
The regulator must be bolted to the wall in the middle of the two cylinders, with the vent facing down;
The connection between the regulator and the cylinder must be done with an appropriate pigtail;
The installation cannot run in the wall. The piping can be passed under the floor but it has to be in a PVC pipe;
The installation must be done with seamless blacksteel, type L-hard copper pipe or copper tubing;
The copper tubing must have an appropriate flare connection;
The appliance that will be connected to the installation must be safe;
The complete installation, including the regulator, cannot have a leak;
The cylinders must be placed in a well-ventilated area that is easily accessible for deliveries and in case of emergencies (it is our recommendation to build a niche at the front of your property).

Some households prefer to use a tank instead of placing two cylinders. This is always possible but the rules for these types of installation vary slightly and we recommend you to contact us to review these together.

If you have a commercial installation, DTI is the authority that carries out the final inspection and certification of the installation. Arugas works closely with DTI and can assist you throughout the whole process so that you are assured to fill out the right forms and follow DTI procedures. Furthermore, our installation team consists of DTI-recognized installers which guarantees that our installations always pass inspection.

Periodic inspection

Both the 100 lbs. cylinders and the stationary tanks require periodic inspection. Our 100 lbs. cylinders are inspected every time we exchange them to ensure they remain safe and fit for use.

If you have a stationary tank at home or at your business, we recommend you to contact us for an inspection appointment. We will send one of our inspectors who can advise you on the state of your tank and will schedule a refurbishment if needed.

All stationary tanks for business use must be certified by DTI. We can assist you with this certification process.

Commercial gas installations and stationary tanks must be recertified every 5 years by DTI.
